When Rodney picked up the phone, he sounded as old as every decade of his sixty-plus years.

“What?”

“Say, ‘Rev. Michaels it’s too early in the morning for this mess,’” Kentucky whispered into the phone. It was the same voice she’d used when they’d had phone sex back in the 80’s.

“What you talkin – ”

“Don’t say my name Rodney,” Kentucky told him. “Say, ‘Rev. Michaels, it’s too early in the morning.’”

Obviously, Rodney wasn’t the man he used to be, but he could follow directions.

“Rev. Michaels, it’s too early in the morning. I got to sleep.”

“She looking at you, ain’t she?”

“Yeah,” Rodney said, “Hold on.”

Listening to Rodney fend off the harsh words his wife spat at him, Kentucky settled back into her bed and waited.

Two very intimate and ironic thoughts made her chuckle to herself. First, she was lying in the same position she used to when she touched herself while talking to him so many years ago. Second, she wondered how she could have had six kids and not a single one of them with the man she loved.

“Yeah,” Rodney said.

Kentucky said, “I know you can’t talk, so listen…”
